The Human Element: Real Staffing
Most importantly, product development requires people. Companies need the right people in the right positions to advance research, oversee quality, navigate regulation, organize clinical trials and perform myriad other critical tasks. Enter Real Staffing.
With offices in 11 countries, Real Staffing provides comprehensive recruitment services for pharma, biotech and medical device corporations. They handle the gamut of companies, from three-person startups to international titans like Roche and Medtronic.
“We want to work closely with clients and be part of their journey,” says Tom Way, vice president, North America for Real Staffing’s parent company, SThree. “We particularly love companies who have interesting products and are emotionally invested in their success or failure.”
Coming to America
Real Staffing has offices in America’s biomedical hotspots: San Francisco, San Diego, Boston, New York and Chicago. Way and colleagues opened the first U.S. office in San Francisco in 2010, during the worst of the economic downturn.
“The lack of budget flexibility made for long, drawn-out hiring processes,” says Way. “Companies had to convince VCs they needed additional talent.”
It was also rough for job seekers, who didn’t have much leverage and often had to jump on their first offer. Four years have made a big difference.
“Now, candidates have ten options,” says Way.
Finding the Perfect Candidate
As companies work their way through the development process, it’s not just a matter of staffing up, they need to find people who will fit the corporate culture and keep products moving forward.
Real Staffing is structured to find that perfect fit. Each consultant is a specialist in a specific market, such as regulatory, quality or biometrics.
“The nature of the roles we recruit for are very critical in the life cycle of a drug,” says Way. “We’re very close to our markets and that allows us to build up knowledge about specific candidates. We’re often able to identify a candidate for a position within minutes.”
Way also notes that Real Staffing’s global reach makes them an appealing partner, particularly for large clients.
“There aren’t many U.S. recruiters who can work with Novartis in Singapore, Australia, London, Zurich, New York and San Francisco,” he says.
For Way, this comprehensive approach, both global and intimate brings a number of rewards beyond financial gain.
“I really enjoy expanding the business,” says Way. “We’re developing client relationships, becoming top tier providers and gaining respect from both candidates and clients. “Still, we’re very much at the beginning of our journey. It’s quite exciting.”
