An Agency in Crisis

Submitted on: 02.05.2008

A recent editorial that ran in the New York Times on Feb. 3, reiterated sentiments that are circulating around Washington D.C. - the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is in a state of crisis.  The reasons for the woes are simple. Congress has repeatedly piled new burdens on the agency without providing enough money and personnel to carry them out.  At a recent hearing before a House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee, members of the agency's scientific advisory board outlined the FDA's many weaknesses including: a lack of scientists who understand rapidly emerging technologies; high turnover rates among scientists; a decrepit information technology system; weak organizational structure; and a shrinking inspection force.
