Basic Research Threatened as NIH Budget Remains Stagnant

Since Congress doubled the budget of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) between 1998 and 2003 funding for the agency has been virtually flat causing concern in laboratories and science departments across the country.  Increased competition for grant money has resulted in funding for ultraconservative proposals as well as a concerning migration of young investigators abandoning research projects for careers in medicine and industry.
