Mark D. Carlson, M.D. was named Vice President, Global Clinical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer for St. Jude Medical in September 2013. Beginning in 2007, he served as Chief Medical Officer and Sr. Vice President Research and Clinical Affairs for the company’s then Cardiac Rhythm Management Division and later the expanded Implantable Electronics Systems Division. Dr. Carlson joined St. Jude Medical in November 2006 as Chief Medical Officer and Sr. Vice President, Clinical Affairs, Cardiac Rhythm Management.
Dr. Carlson received his M.D. from the University of Kansas, and a master’s degree in public policy from Duke University. He trained in internal medicine at University Hospitals of Cleveland and Case Western Reserve University, and in cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University. While at Case, Dr. Carlson served in several roles including vice chair of the department of medicine and associate vice president for government relations. He has served in a variety of industry and government advisory roles and his research on arrhythmias and neural control has resulted in over 150 publications.
