Organization Profile
Pfizer Inc discovers, develops, manufactures, and markets leading prescription medicines for humans and animals and many of the world's best-known consumer brands. Our innovative, value-added products improve the quality of life of people around the world and help them enjoy longer, healthier, and more productive lives. The company has three business segments: health care, animal health and consumer health care. Pfizer products are available in more than 150 countries.
During the past four years, Pfizer has nearly tripled in size, adding some 80,000 new colleagues, many new products across a range of therapeutic areas and billions of dollars in sales and earnings. Global sales in 2005 exceeded $52.3 billion with more than 1 billion prescriptions written for Pfizer medications. Pfizer has also broadened efforts to expand access to medicines and healthcare, and to partner as a corporate citizen working to solve some of the world’s most pressing healthcare crises. Pfizer manages the world’s largest pharmaceutical research effort with hundreds of research projects across 18 therapeutic areas – more than any other company. In 2005 the company invested $721 billion in research and development funding. With more than 122,000 colleagues worldwide, Pfizer is also deeply engaged in the global community, donating hundreds of millions of dollars of medicines to treat AIDS patients in Africa, to eliminate blinding trachoma in the developing world and to expand drug access in the United States.
Pfizer’s pharmaceutical business is the largest in the world. At the end of 2005, fourteen pharmaceutical products remained number one in their respective therapeutic category. Pfizer’s marketed pharmaceutical products include: Lipitor, the most widely prescribed cholesterol-lowering drug in the world; Norvasc, the world’s most-prescribed branded medicine for hypertension; Zoloft, a leading antidepressant medication that also treats panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder in adults and children, post-traumatic stress disorder; Neurontin, an add-on therapy for epilepsy; Geodon, for the treatment of symptoms associated with schizophrenia; Celebrex, the most prescribed arthritis medicine in the U.S. for relief of pain and inflammation of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis; Zithromax, the largest-selling antibiotic worldwide; Diflucan, the leading systemic antifungal in the world; Viagra, a treatment for erectile dysfunction, is the world’s most recognized pharmaceutical brand and among the most widely prescribed medications; Detrol, the world’s leading product for the treatment of overactive bladder; Xalatan, the most prescribed glaucoma medicine in the U.S., Europe and Japan and the first and only prostaglandin with a first-line indication for the treatment of elevated eye pressure; Zyrtec, the leading branded antihistamine in the U.S. in new prescriptions.
