Genentech Cancer Drug Approved for Kidney Cancer

CHI member Genentech's Avastin was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be used to treat a common form of kidney cancer. Avastin, which has been already approved to treat types of lung, breast and colon cancer, will help battle advanced renal cell carcinoma, in the U.S., 50,000 new cases of this kidney disease are diagnosed each year. This will be the sixth approval the drug has received from the FDA. Initially approved in 2004, Avastin was the first drug to fight cancer by restricting blood flow to tumors, considered a significant advance beyond chemotherapy.
