Government Leaders Discuss Healthcare Reform at BIO Conference

Submitted on: 05.22.2009

On Wednesday, four political leaders including Karl Rove, former top adviser to President George W. Bush; ex-Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist; former Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean; and Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle debated healthcare reform at the 2009 BIO International Conference in Atlanta. Republicans Rove and Frist warned that a public healthcare plan could have huge costs and potentially hurt private-sector innovation. Dean, however, responded that in order to ensure future innovation biotech companies need legislation that has strong patent protection. Dean strongly supports Rep. Anna Eshoo's (D-CA) bill, which was introduced in March and believes creating a pathway for approval of follow-on biologics that protects innovators will be key to achieving healthcare reform.
