The University of California Board of Regents confirmed Susan Desmond-Hellmann as chancellor of CHI member University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Desmond-Hellmann will bring her extensive background in biotechnology, recently serving as president of product development at CHI member Genentech. Desmond-Hellmann said in an interview with the San Francisco Business Times that she would like to be known as a strong supporter for all segments of the school, not just biotech. Among her top priorities as chancellor, Desmond-Hellmann plans to tackle replacing much of the UCSF's retiring executive team, to hire a new dean for the medical school and to raise private philanthropy to help fund operations of a possible neurological disease center in Mission Bay and a stem cell research facility at its Parnassus Avenue campus.
