Federal health officials have called upon California biotechs to help battle swine flu. CHI member Life Technologies Corporation was given emergency clearance by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for its two instruments, 7500 Fast and Fast Dx Real-Time PCR, to help identify patients with the new strain of swine flu. In addition to supplying these machines, Life Technologies has assembled a 24-hour task force to help public health laboratories of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention with their work. Other CHI member companies that have been combating the crisis are Gilead Sciences and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. Gilead's Tamiflu has been the top drug being used to fight the virus and Kleiner Perkins has invested in two companies, Novavax Inc. and BioCryst Pharmaceuticals, which are working to develop vaccines for the flu.
