Gilead’s Drug Trial Shows Half of Patients Successfully Lowered Blood Pressure

CHI member Gilead Sciences released its Phase III trial results of its experimental drug darusentan, a new treatment for patients with treatment resistant hypertension.  The drug successfully lowered the blood pressure of more than half of the patients being treated with darusentan compared to one-quarter of patients taking a placebo.  This encouraged investors, who were wary of Gilead's decision to focus on creating treatments for other diseases, including cardiovascular disease, causing Gilead's shares to rise 6 percent.  Darusentain will be a once-a-day pill like Gilead's blockbuster HIV drug Viread, and if approved analyst believe this drug could potentially generate sales in the range of $500 million to $1 billion.
