Responsible Legislation will Boost Scientific Discovery

Submitted on: 03.30.2009

The Pasadena Star-News published an op-ed article submitted by CHI board member Michael Friedman, M.D., president and chief executive officer of City of Hope, praising California's biotechnology industry for its many achievements, but calling attention to the need for legislation to support continued innovation. Friedman used follow-on biologics legislation as one example where legislators will need to work with the industry to ensure patient safety and the future of treatments for critical diseases. Biotechnology drugs are vastly different from traditional pharmaceuticals and far more complex. The complexity and intricacy of biologics make it very difficult, if not impossible, to identically replicate a "generic" or "follow-on" version. As Congress works legislation to create a pathway for the approval of follow-on biologics by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Friedman urges legislators to ensure patient safety and the future of biotechnology innovation by focusing on the science, not the politics of the issue.
