Colorado Loves California?

As Valentine’s Day approaches, the state of Colorado has a message for California citizens, executives, and venture capitalists weary of Sacramento’s political gridlock and protracted budget fights: we love you-come to Denver. The campaign, as reported in today’s Wall Street Journal, includes full-page ads in major California newspapers, complete with an image of Cupid in skis that read, “California, can you feel Colorado’s love?” Planes will also fly over Los Angeles at rush hour today with banners inviting Californians to give Colorado a try. This public relations blitz is part of a coordinated effort by the Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation to lure California citizens and businesses to the Centennial State. With the life sciences industry still feeling the pinch from California’s two-year suspension of the research and development tax credit at 50 percent as part of last year’s budget deal, efforts by other states to attract our industry may be finding an audience. Massachusetts Governor Duvall Patrick visited the Bay Area last week to pitch his state to the biotech industry, and several reports have Governor Rick Perry of Texas crisscrossing the streets of San Diego, pitching incentives for firms to relocate to Austin. Colorado’s campaign stands out for high visibility and wit. Thousands of CEOs across California will receive valentines this week that read: “Mile-high state seeks sea-level executive…”
