San Diego Biotechs Receive Stem Cell Grants

Six biotech commercial operations in San Diego received grants from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM). Among the recipients included CHI members University of California, San Diego and Life Technologies Corporation, formerly known as Invitrogen. The research team at Life Technologies said it will use its grant to focus on creating tools and methods for treating Lou Gehrig's disease. Steve Dowdy, a UCSD professor, said their grant will support his team's research of pluripotent cells. CIRM has distributed more than 229 grants before yesterday, but industry executives believe too many recipients are academic researchers.
