Celebrating Global and Local Biotech Breakthroughs in San Diego

Two decades ago California's first biotechnology company, CHI member company, Genentech, was created. Since then San Diego and the Bay Area have emerged as two of three primary biotech hubs in the nation. California is now a leader in the biomedical industry, which has 2,700 companies and more than 100 universities and private non-profit research organizations. The state's biomedical industry accounts for 267, 000 California jobs, locally San Diego has 400 biomedical companies and research laboratories that employs 40,000 San Diegans. To celebrate the industry's accomplishments locally and globally, 20,000 executives from around the world will gather in San Diego for the BIO International Convention, an annual conference for the Biotechnology Industry Organization at the San Diego Convention Center, June 17 - 20.
