Cancer researchers are increasingly turning to new, innovative therapies, based on particles measuring less than 200 nanometers. One such therapy, Doxil, produced by Ortho Biotech Products LP, a unit of Johnson & Johnson, uses this approach to treat certain myeloma and ovarian cancers. Cancer researchers believe that further engineering the shape or surface properties of nanoparticles can enable the particles to actively target tumors, and thereby maximize their diagnostic or therapeutic function at the cancer site, while minimizing collateral damage to healthy tissue.
