Kurstjens currently serves as president and CEO of Agensys Inc., a Santa Monica, Calif.-based biotechnology company and wholly-owned subsidiary of Astellas Pharma Inc. Prior to Agensys, Kurstjens served as senior vice president, chief medical officer and head of global drug development at Allergan Inc., and as senior vice president and head of U.S. research and development at Astellas Pharma U.S. Inc. Kurstjens previously held positions of increasing responsibilities with Pfizer Inc. in both the United Kingdom and United States, including Worldwide Therapeutic Area Head for Gastrointestinal and Genitourinary Products and Head of Clinical Research and Development in Groton/New London, Conn. Kurstjens began his pharmaceutical career with Sandoz Pharma AG, in Basel, Switzerland. Kurstjens attended University of the Witwatersrand Medical School, Johannesburg where he received his medical degree and a doctorate of philosophy.
